NO, NO don’t make me pick tomatoes, especially cherry tomatoes, which are not only hard to see but my paws don’t quite work that daintily. I think I’ll just snip off the whole branch and that way they’ll remain fresh for eating (heh, heh, mama duped again and my work cut in half!).
But seriously, folks, there’s nothing like the sweet little tomatoes and fresh basil to round out the summer, what we’ve had of it!
Mama’s neighbour filled up another bucket of his tomatoes this morning and we had a really good tomato soup for lunch. Well, THEY had it. I had food for kitties, which is fine with me because every now and then there’s some tomato in it–Vitamin C and all that–but mama’s tomato soup smells pretty good, even to a kitty.
Into a pot she puts a little olive oil, a chopped up sweet onion, about a gazillion tomatoes, chopped (let’s say in reality about 10), a half teaspoon of salt and pinch of sugar, then she puts on the lid and simmers the whole shebang for about 20 minutes.
You know those frappers that whip up everything so nicely? Well, this is mama’s:
You just whiz everything up until it’s smooth and then serve it into bowls. OR, to be more refoined…Put the whole thing into a colander and stir over a large bowl until you have only seeds left. THEN eat it. Mama puts a dollop of yogurt in it, or sour cream or croutons or whatever you wish, or nothing.
Do you know how many tomatoes you are getting into your system with this soup?
ALOT!
But it tastes like summer (it’s good cold, too) and that’s what we need around here lately. ANYTHING to make us think of summer.
At least it’s still warm enough to sip out of my private fountain…well, birdbath.
Loulou, your momma grows pretty cherry tomatoes! My mom doesn’t care for tomato soup, but then again she hasn’t tried your momma’s version. Say do you know if we kitties can nibble on fresh basil? I wonder… that is something Mom could grow in a pot outside or inside if it is safe, ’cause I like myself some good greens to teeth on. Envoyer des bisous.
Wait a minute. Tomato soup is one of the bestest soups in the WORLD. With fresh tomatoes, not canned. Just cook fresh tomatoes with sweet onion for about 20 minutes, add salt and then a bit of olive oil and whiz everything up with a whizzer, whatever that is. Add a bit of yogurt or sour cream and you’ll be in soup heaven.
The mom wishes she lived next door to your neighbor so she could get fresh vegetables like those. We would just play with those tomatoes if we saw them on the counter.
Hey, you guys would play in the cherry tomato bushes and mama wouldn’t care at all—Mya, the doggy, EATS them.
I don’t even like soup and that looks tasty to me! 🙂 Mamma sure knows the best recipes!
Glad you’re still able to drink from your private fountain! And here’s to a long autumn, one that’s warm 🙂
Even soup-haters love that tomato soup recipe…with a nice grilled cheese sandwich on the side!
You don’t peel any of the tomatoes,do you ? Even more good nutrients ! With Mama’s sourdoughbread.
Hey, mama wrote an article once with the title of “Peeled, Seeded and Tasteless!” We don’t peel anything around here except mangoes and bananas, haha. Peel has all the nutrients and most of our food is bio.
The one time I tried to peel a mango, it ended up being more of a “mangle”!
Oh, you are so funny. Use a carrot peeler, mama says. Works like a charm.
That looks so good.
Well, it’s a first-of-autumn soup! With the last of the tomatoes.
Mmmm, I want me some of that soup! I need to use tomatoes more often, but I always botch recipes that use them.
Tomatoes are hard to botch, mama says. Just keep it simple. Onion, tomato, olive oil, salt, cook until soft and whiz up for soup.
That’s so funny ! Claire made cherry tomato soup from the garden yesterday ! She puts garlic instead of onion, and eat it with croutons. Bon appétit ! Ronrons
Yes, yes, croutons. Papa eats our soups with croutons, too. And now we’ll use cherry tomatoes for sure!
