OH, NO, more photos?
Well, mama keeps sending me things she has discovered on her walks in Rome, so I thought I’d put them in today as a little travelogue for summer.
What was funny and wonderfully eclectic (whatever that is) about this scene is that there were three Catholic priests, a guitar player and a saxophone player during the Hare Krishna chants and dancing.
Musicians on left, priests in middle, and the Krishnas approaching from the Pantheon.
For years, mama has walked through the ancient 2000-year-old Jewish ghetto in Rome and never seen the plaques imbedded in the cobblestones in front of many, many private houses–the names of those who died during the Holocaust.
The names of those arrested, deported and sent to Auschwitz. These are all over the city, these small plaques of terrible memories, but homages to those who died.
This is mama’s favourite street tenor who sings arias from famous operas, and Bocelli songs, and every now and then, a total stranger, like this lady, comes out of the crowd and sings the last high notes of (this time) Puccini. These were particularly good examples, as mama’s video doesn’t seem to want to upload!
Mama always gets teary when he is singing; opera does that to us.
The glorious evening sky over the Pantheon.
A little girl tests the Bocca della Verita (facsimile) in a local pizzeria. She was telling the truth so she didn’t lose her fingers!
Not sure I would put my hand in there…
Would a foot do?
Thank you for sharing your mama’s photos of Rome. What a fun and eclectic place! The mom would love to visit Rome someday.
Do not let her come unless WE are here to suggest things to see. And to meet me, of course.
Oooh, Loulou – what a beautiful post – Mama is imagining the impromptu opera. But a sad note on the Holocost victims – brings to mind the sad but wonderful film “Life is Beautiful”. Well, FINALLY, internet that works!! I’ve been missing our correspondance as the anthros have been dragging me around the Lakes of Italy – I even rode on a boat! And a funicular and I had to wear a muzzle. Imagine that. I guess they thought I would steal somebody’s food…..well, just be glad you don’t have to live through the horrors of travel. I am SOOOO glad to get back home!!!!!
OH, NO, MYA MUZZLED!!! HORREUR. I am so, so glad you are back in your home, and you said a BOAT??? HORREUR again. I’m glad you like the singer. He has been doing that for years and years.
If you don’t want to put your hand (foot) in there, does that mean you aren’t telling the truth, Loulou? Of course you are! (Telling the truth.) We’re just kidding.
Er…well…not sure I would put my paw in there at all. Did you see the movie with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in which she put her hand in the lion and he scared her and she jumped a foot…Gregory scared her, NOT the lion, haha.
I love that the priests, the Hare Krishnas, and the musicians, were all in front of the Pantheon. That is exactly what the Pantheon was for !
Oh, Mary, your observations and comments come from a most unusual and marvelous brain.
