Are the holidays really upon us?
Well, it’s not just Halloween that creates haunts.
Are you getting the holiday haunt? Mama is on a tear, mainly because she contributes to BREAD magazine, which is all about, well, bread and things, and she has just polished up her panettone recipe for the mag and so is making us all drool ahead of holiday time. But some homemade gifts freeze well, like those chocolate truffles mama makes all the time (slurp, slurp) and this panettone is no exception, which is why she’s making it now.
It is baked in coffee cans, and so can be sliced horizontally and toasted for winter mornings.
Personally, I’m interested in the butter you can slather on it, not so much the bread but I can see how anthros might like a bread filled with toasted almonds, candied orange and lemon peel, a few rum-soaked raisins (whatever they are) and topped with pink icing (optional; mama uses pine nuts instead on the top of her bread).
Can you believe that we are getting ready for holidays already and it’s not even THANKSGIVING? What about those gobblers and dressing and sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce (whatever that is)? Huh? Huh? And I just thought of this: what if someone has a turkey for a pet? Oh, boy…
You’re gonna do WHAT with that stuffing?
I just wish the holy-days were not so commercial. Mama is hoping that this year we will, as a family, draw ONE name out of a hat and do that ONE present for that ONE person.
Hate to say this, but in your dreams…
Where two small grandkids are involved, that’s hard to do, mama says. Hey, make that THREE small kids, okay?
Visions of sugarplums are NOT dancing in this head—not yet anyway!
Now my peep is salivating but also crying as despite how nice that all sounds we are gluten free, very nearly. Well I don’t have bread at all so I at least am doing well. Holidays are too commercial, for sure and come too quick to be good for anyone. Maybe if we had less, that would be better? purrs ERin
Well, mama is a baker and of course has strong ideas about who actually cannot support gluten and who can and if one chooses to be gluten-free, so be it. But a small amount certainly would not kill you once a year, an itsy bitsy slice of panettone will only put you in a sweet holiday mood. And yes, all too commercial, these holidays. Maybe we can change that little by little. I will draw one name and then mama and papa will draw a name but I will have put MY name on ALL the pieces of paper!!! Mya, my doggy friend, taught me that.
OK Loulou, here’s the deal. Take out ALL those names in Mama’s hat and refill with YOURS!!! I know writing’s not your forté so just make a paw-print and she’ll figure out it’s YOU!!!! And for my brilliance, you can thank me by saving about 5 cherry tomatoes for me. My favorite. Yippee!!!
Oh, Mya, all the tomatoes are OVER, whatever that means. BUT..there are a few on the ground just waiting as a treat for you. I’ll try to keep them fresh for your arrival but…
You are such a beautiful kitty, Loulou!
Oh, really? I never thought I was as beautiful as a ragdoll or those fluffy ones but thank you. I have my certain ‘look’.
How funny, Our friends at Four-Legged Furballs have a similar post today. Mom loves Thanksgiving and all that nommy food. And panettone is one of Mom’s absolute favorites. Dad baked two loves of challah today. He was doing it for a photo shoot, but Mom could hardly wait to eat it when he was done doing the photos. You are looking quite adorable today (as usual) Loulou. WOW, your papa bakes? He must take a look at No Need To Knead, mama’s book on easy baking. And the panettone recipe is in there. You can find cranberry pistacchio online, too, if you google it and write Suzanne Dunaway (mama’s name). Hats off to a challah baker. Wish we had some.
I like the idea of choosing names for adults, but I like kids to have lots of fun opening gifts- kitties too 🙂 My Mom gets a gift for each of my cats.
OH, BOY. What a grammie! Yes, kids and kitties love to open gifts and I guess that’s just the way it is. But when they open and toss aside waiting for the next, something’s not right. Fewer gifts and more surprise, maybe, works.
Dat’s right LouLou, you need to get a purresent too. Mommy always gives us extra special huggies fur da holidays. Me luvs Christmas lights and so mommy puts them out and turns them on fur me every night. It’s wonderful. You’re lookin’ bootyful as always. Big hugs fur all of ya’. Enjoy da bakin’, maybe your mommy will drop a little sumfin’ fur you. 🙂
Luv ya’

Yes, I love the tree, which is always near where I sleep because the twinklies are so nice to watch at night. There will be a photo in my blog when the night rolls around in December.
Your mom sure does know how to make Jan hungry. She says that sounds yummy. Your mom must be a fancy baker.
We’re with you, we’ll take some of the butter that drips off a slice.
Mama was a professional baker but papa says if she starts it up again, he’s blowing town. Not really, but they got up at 2 and 3 am and on holidays did not sleep at all.
That is a lovely selfie. That turkey has every reason to look worried.
You know, if there is one bird I have very little respect for it is the turkey. A no-brainer that one. But I’m pretty lenient with birds, it’s mama who wants to stuff one!
Lovely selfie, Loulou ! Purrs
Thank you, I borrowed it from a previous blog and cut it in half, haha.
You made me hungry! I just love holiday food. And to help me prepare, I just bought a new cross trainer this weekend. Gotta do something to counteract all that butter and fat!

I hope you mom knows that the best ingredient for a panettone is a big juicy mouse! Yummy!
WOW. I’ll have to pass that on to her. I think she’s into raisins and fruits but a nice mouse sounds PERFECT!
Great selfie!
Poor turkey (says Mum)
Purrs xx

Well, I’m not sure we are having a turkey around here, but you never know….mama likes fish. Like me. Can you stuff a fish with stuffing?
Now that we would like to see.
It’s pretty funny!
The turkey? Or me?
You look absolutely adorable in your Selfie, LouLou and you are the cutest kid in the basket. Pawkisses for an Easy Sunday 🙂 <3
My selfie was during my Zen and Peace phase. But I also used that photo to intimidate a Doberman pincer once.
