I didn’t get ANY!!!
Well, we had latkes for dinner on the 12th in honor of Hanukkah and boy were they good. Well, I think they were good because I SMELLED them sizzling but I’m not allowed to have onions so what the heck.
Mama described them for me as I listened patiently, drooling all over myself. Crispy potato/onion/flour/egg batter spooned into a thin layer of olive oi or sunflower oil and pressed down to make little cakes, then browned on both sides and served warm with whatever you are having. Mama thinks they would even be good for breakfast with cinnamon and sugar!!!
So we celebrated one holiday and now the next one is just days away. I think that calls for Christmas Pudding…hmmmm. Don’t think I can have that, either, whatever that is.
Isn’t there something kitties can eat during holidays???
Um…sorry, I just couldn’t resist. Apologies to all rat owners….
You should have at least gotten a little taste, Loulou. Happy Hannukkah.
Well, after mama read that great recipe from Caren, I think I might get a taste of something new.
First of all Hag Sameach Loulou.
How about you suggest to your mama she skips the sugar and cinnamon ones and does this one instead? It contains white cheese, so you are bound to LOVE them. No onions at all. So here go the ingredients:
250 g cream cheese (fromage blanc)
1 big egg
2 full table spoons of sugar
1/2 tea spoon vanilla
1 tea spoon of grated lemon peal
4 full table spoons (70g) of self-raising flouer. If you don’t get that in France, than just add some yeast to the same amount of regular white flour.
As for Christmas, forget the Christmas Pudding. Not very tasty for French tastes. But if you are already thinking British, you could always try to get your mama to order you
“Lily’s Kitchen Christmas Turkey Feast for Cats” from Britain.
AHHH, I just saw TWO SPOONS of sugar, not TWO CUPS. Thank heaven. Yes, mama will try these for sure.
Tell your mother to try this for sweet latkes. That way you will be able to eat them and love them, too:
250 g cream cheese (fromage blanc)
1 egg
2 cups of sugar
1/2 tea spoon vanilla sugar
1 tea spoon of any citrus fruit peels you like
70 g self-raising flower. Since your mama will probably not find that in France, just let her add some yeast to that amount of flower
Wow, those are sweeties!!! Thank you. But two cups of sugar???
ohhhhh, Loulou, you bad girl, you!!! That adorable mouse looks WAY too cute to eat – would make a nice playmate though! Mama says she was told that latkes in Poland are sometimes served with sugar! Hopefully they leave out the onion – but this was just what she heard – but hey – what if you used sweet potatoes?! Uh oh – she’s got that “i want Picard oven sweet potato fries” look on her face…………
OH, how we miss Picard’s sweet potatoes for the oven…..
MOL! Loulou, I wonder if your momma’s latke’s taste like McD’s french fries,’cause I like those, though Mom doesn’t like me eating them ’cause they’re greasy & salty. Say, I think we kitties can eat tapioca pudding at least the kitties before me used to sample Mom’s occasionally. How ’bout ice cream for you? Hugs!
They tasted, I think, like very crispy but soft in the center potato pancakes.
those look delicious but my favorites are when the potatoes are grated so that the latkes come out spidery……most Jews don’t make the perfectly shaped ones, other heritages usually make them more perfectly shaped. No matter how anyone makes them they are still delicious! I like mine with sour cream!
Will get mama to try using sour cream. DROOL.
Happy Hannukkah. Those look delicious. Any left over?
Sound really good for breakfast. Kind of like a potato donut then, wouldn’t they be?
WOW, my mama’s mama used to make potato doughnuts!!!! WOW. Great simile.
I just made some for our supper. I use panko bread crumbs instead of flour. We had to say no to the cats because they have onions in them.
HEY, panko sounds wonderful. Mama will try that next time. We don’t reserve them for holidays! But we’re not anything so we can eat anything anytime and think it’s a holiday, haha.
Heather and Samantha like toasted pumpkin seeds (pepitas). Are those easy to find where you are, Loulou? (Most plants in the squash family have edible seeds. Pumpkin and calabaza have the *big* fruits and seeds that humans take the trouble to dry, shell, and toast.)
Hey, great idea! And yes we have them. And Loulou can have those? GREAT!!! Thank you.
Boy those latkes look wonderful ! For the breakfast ones with cinnamon and sugar (or maple syrple ?) you might want to skip the onion. Then they would be kitty compatible, non ?
Hey, great idea!!! Yes, would want to skip the onion anyway…ech! Thank you for a good, good idea. Or maybe mama will just make me mouse muffins or partridge pancakes.
Happy Hanukkah ! Purrs
