Whew! They’re gone. Now I can get some REST!
The outer skin debris from the onions with romesco sauce in the background,
Well, mama came home yesterday raving about those onions on the grill that I wrote about yesterday. A casual invitation from friends who had visited them when we were in Italy said, “stop by around 1pm for some grilled calçots” (whatever those are!), and just by chance mama grabbed a package of sausages from the bio store and papa took some wine and mama’s limoncello and mama had made a fougasse (that nice bread with holes in it) and some chocolate truffles and picked some rosemary for the grill and when they finally got there, there were ten or so neighbors sitting around a table watching the host grill these succulent, sweet onions.
Hey, anthros are weird. Onions? I don’t eat them but differences make the world spin, right?
“A casual little gathering,” mama said to me, “is a grand feast for these neighbors!” Oh, and by the way, mama had done some research and made a romesco, the sauce in which the grilled onions are dipped–grilled garlic, tomato, olive oil, grilled almonds, sweet pepper, bread and vinegar all whipped up into a smooth paste.
But a ‘casual’ lunch turned out to be sliced Spanish ham (the host had WON a whole one (!) at a rifle, a bingo game), the grilled onions, sausages, a duck (tough but tasty), red and white turnips braised in broth, and the traditional cheese board and a magnificent raspberry/banana tart by a lady who became famous around here for her incredible quiches and tarts. The company was Tartemarie and here are the photos. Unfortunately for us but fortunately for her, she has sold the company.
The owner of Tartemarie, in her kitchens.
The host, Henri, grilling sausages and onions.
The hostess, Michiko, demonstrating how to ‘peel’ off the outer charred skin of the onion. This is not a dish for forks and knives, mama said. The guests were covered in charcoal by the end of it! Not for fastidious eaters, either.
After that story, I felt I really needed to clean up a bit.
I hope no one wore white gloves to this party…

That was one tasty feast!
OMC my Mom is dying about how DELICIOUS everything looks!!! YUM!! Love, Cody
I think you can try this with new spring onions, too. Just peel off the outside charred bits and eat the soft interior with the sauce romesco.
Company is nice but so is the quiet after they have gone too,xx Speedy
Oh, yes, peace and quiet and peanut butter sandwiches, haha.
Uh,,,, Loulou – did you not think to ask Mama to throw a piece of that tough duck in a Doggie Bag (sorry, we dogs get blamed for all things related to gluttony – eat like a dog, doggie bag, etc) for YOU?!? I can see we have some work to do. I know all the tricks for getting extra food……….
Mya, I’m not sure even your little impressive teeth could have managed THAT duck. But I’ll bet it’s going to be good soup!
MeOW LouLou, sounds like and looks like your mommy had a delishus time. Oh, you two are so kind to me. You mean I don’t have to BATHE? WOW.
I am glad you don’t eat onions, they are poisonous to kitties. That looks like a fun time. I wouldn’t want to dirty my hands though.
Mama looked as if she had been in the coal mines when she got home. Well, not really but I imagine she did AT the party.
Oh Loulou- that all looks delicious ! Though with all the onions and garlic, it was a good thing none of that was available for a kitty to taste !
No, we don’t eat that stuff. But I do eat green beans and tomatoes in my food. Oh and carrots. I love veggies.
All that food and you weren’t invited? You should have made a second peanut butter sandwich for yourself. You deserved a special treat. 🙂
I should have made SEVERAL. Wish you guys had been here to tear up the place.
I think Bear likes the peace and quiet when I’m gone too. Looks like your parents had a special meal with special friends! And you are adorable and beautiful as always, Loulou.
Oh, thank you. I really actually do miss them when they go out for SAUSAGE!!! And no leftovers brought home. Little do they know I fixed myself a PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH, HAH!
MOL, it sure looks like it had potential to be very messy in deed. Mouses! One of the reasons I keep peep away from fire, and for that matter cooking, is that I know everything turns out burnt, even things meant to be burnt would be beyond salvation. Thankfully I get my own food so cooking isn’t a problem for me.
Purrs, Erin
Oh, Erin, you are so funny. These onions were meant to be burnt and evidently they were dee-licious.
