You say there is a rabbit that lays eggs?  Who are you kiddin’?

Well, the word for Easter is Pâques in French (derived from the Latin pascha, or the Jewish, Passover, during which Christ was supposed to have been resurrected) and though Sunday is the date of the resurrection and church services, Monday is the special day for celebration with friends and family and many delicious dishes.  I have my eye on some smoked haddock, heh heh, whatever that is…

Bessières is a village in the Pyrenees mountains close to the Spanish border, and on Easter Monday, the inhabitants make a huge omelette with 15,000 eggs in a pan four meters (about 13 feet) wide in diameter. They then hold a communal meal to eat it.

WOW. Fifteen thousand eggs?  Well, they say that to make an omelette, you have to break eggs, right?  DUH!  But who does all that cracking?  Maybe mama will visit the little town one Easter and watch them stir, doing an amazing feat.

I mean, they don’t stir with their FEET, haha.

I know mama would like the shells for our garden…hmmm.

Around here mama will be making artichokes in the Roman style, braised with mint and garlic, and a special focaccia in the shape of a basket for the friend who is hosting the Easter lunch.  There will also be…er…a braised animal that perhaps one should not mention, what with all the vegetarians around, but France was never a country to stop serving culinary delights.  Don’t wish to get into that debate, not when I am being promised a nice piece of whatever it is myself!!!  And frankly, I don’t know many veggie kitties, do you?

Last night there was a sweet procession through our little ville–a long line of penitents carrying chariots (floats) of the virgin on their shoulders, dressed in robes and tall, pointy hoods.  Unfortunately, the Ku Klux Klan comes to mind, but long ago when we first were here, the penitents were barefoot, and we all tried to guess by their feet who was under the robes, haha.  Not that we knew anyone’s feet that well!

One time mama was pretty sure she saw feet belonging to a guy who was dallying with someone’s wife…uh, oh, I won’t get into this.  That was years ago and anyway, they all wear shoes now.

This kitty is going to look for her bunny suit so that maybe the real Easter bunny will leave a treat for me in my basket.  I’m giving mama some eggshells…

Hey, mama, what does a bunny look like anyway?
