Oh, boy, mama has just about finished a book and now we sweat! The search for another book begins and as it stands now, she has a pretty blank list except for The Wife, by Meg Wolizer, which her step-daughter gave her for her birthday and it’s about over.
I love to read over her shoulder, but when we finished the Martin Cruz Smith books set in Russia, I was ready for something, well, with a little less vodka in the pages. Just kidding—he’s a masterful writer and I LOVE Arkady, the investigator, and the wild man, Victor, and Arlady’s sort-of son, the chess genius.
But back to the subject: mama needs titles and if anyone out there has read something good lately, pass it on. Mama gets really antsy without a book and wanders around looking out at the horizon like a zombie searching for playmates. She’s actually thinking, “When is the next Donna Leon coming out?” Or, why doesn’t Martin Cruz Smith WRITE something SOON?”
Mama is pretty demanding if you ask me. Not all authors can turn out a novel every year just to make people like mama happy! I’m going on Amazon when she’s not looking and I’m ordering something for ME—Warrior Cats or The Cat’s Table (uh, oh, I think we have that one and mama loved it, I remember, but I must have been asleep when she read to me), but I’ll find something so we can read together and I don’t have to hear about World War II or serial killers or women growing up with monkeys and things like that.
Still, my education is pretty varied, what with all the subjects mama seems to pick in literature. Ahah! I see that she has Anna Karinina and War and Peace and they ARE NOT YET OPENED!!!
That’ll give her something to get into of an evening, you can bet your Cossack boots!
Hey, I think I see what I want…The Rabbit Suicides!
