(I think I licked the butter/sugar spoon too long…)
Well, it is almost January 6th, Epiphany, called la befana in Italy and here it is the day the French go gaga over le gateau or galette des rois, or cake of kings, a round, decorated puff-pastry cake filled with frangipane (almond paste, almond flour, sugar, eggs, rum, vanilla), and inside there is always a little fava bean or tiny figurine and whoever gets the piece with the charm is king for the day and wears a golden paper crown! Or queen, I might add…
What fun. Mama will make hers tomorrow so we’ll have more photos. I stir the sugar into the butter, hehheh…when her back is turned, well…..
.
I just don’t want to break my remaining teeth on that bean charm, so mama is using a big raisin when she gives her little cakes to friends.
Personally, I think a piece of kibble would be best, but mama is rolling her eyes,..
Mama, do you have a Tums for my tummy?
Beautiful cake.
It is very easy to make, Andrew, I’m sure you could do it! Let me know if you get a response from your comment.
I think someone may swallow that bean without biting. Never know
HEY, they’ll grow vines out of their ears, said mama’s grandpapa.
OMG so much almond! I’m over the moon! Thankfully, I do NOT bake!! But….I do want a bite!
Easy to make, Caren, really. If you have a grinder or food processor.
Oh boy! I can’t wait to see the cake your Mama makes….I bet it will be gorgeous. This is a very yummy tradition!!
Hugs, Teddy
I missed these comments. Forgive me!
MOL…I love that picture, LouLou, you’re so cute😸Pawkisses for a Happy New Year. Let’s make it a better one🐾😽💞
OH, and to you two, too!!! Sorry I’m late in delivery….
LOL – Mamma gets hers from Picard!! And we still have some – I got to wear the crown for a few minutes. In New Orleans people kept breaking teeth on the ceramic figurines – so when I left, the “Baby Jesus” was rubber – and one could order black or white. Well, brown or pink. But it was different – here they are better – with the frangipane! There, it’s just cake with Mardi Gras colors of sugar in yellow and purple.
Well, mama’s is dull, pastry and a fava bean. Simple. But I still think I’ll slip a kibble in one…
Happy new year to you and your mama and papa, Loulou! What a delicious looking cake.
Well, we’ll see how it turns out later… I’ll do the cake shoot.
That looks good. My Penny is going to write about Epiphany tomorrow. She will add a link to send readers over to your recipe. XO
How wonderful of her. I’ll get mama to put HER simply recipe on my blog today.
Sounds like fun combined with a delicious cake LouLou ! But don’t YOU eat that raisin – they aren’t good for kitties either.
EUEWWW…raisins are not my favorite food. Why are they bad? Too much..er..roughage?
I don’t know – just that raisins – and grapes – are bad for cats and dogs. I don’t know about the wine though…
Well, I am a teetotaler, that’s for sure, haha.
Those sound good and sure look pretty!
