Loulou, things will get better, you’ll see…
Well, there were many pieces of art saved by a long line of hand over hand helpers, and the stone structure is still intact, sigh.
A good friend has mentioned to us that overhead fire-fighting planes were not used because of the risk of collapsing the already weak wooden parts. That made sense.
What was so lovely/sad/moving was seeing one of the ancient stone angels, lifted by a crane, and flying through the air to safety. I wept with mama and papa.
And there are so many pledges for the reconstruction.
Mama and papa once stayed on the Ile St Louis and gazed out at the back of Notre Dame. Sweet memories.
Merci to you all for your kind comments and thoughtfulness. Although I am the only one around here who is French (!), I do have many French friends and they are all devastated. I like to think of the things that were saved, and the future re-building of that magnificent cathedral.
I wish I could go help, do something, but not sure a kitty can do much, except hope. Papa’s knees help, too.
Have they said what the cause of it was yet? The last I heard was that it was a horrible accident. It’s so sad (((hugs)))
It was a horrible accident, I think. We don’t know yet.
Yes, really heartbreaking, but an accident.
We have heard the amazing worldwide outpouring of donations to rebuild. It will never be as it was but it will be there for centuries to come
Timmy and the Easter Kitties
Yes, it is wonderful and overwhelmingly positive! It WILL still be there, thank heaven!
Yes, Loulou – that’s all that we can do – love and comfort those who love us so much. It has been amazing to watch the amount of contributions coming in and the emotion felt from all over the world for this landmark that has withstood and passed through unscathed through the centuries. The treasures inside seem to have endured, thanks to the pompiers who risked their lives! It will feel like a hole in the ile de la cité but will be rebuilt to withstand another few centuries.
Unfortunately this is the twelfth or thirteenth church in France damaged recently – sorry, Notre Dame should not be a part of ‘churches’ the seat of Christianity –
It is so sad to hear the derogatory remarks from those over here who should know better – just too young to be in their vaulted positions of ‘leadership’
I do not know about the remarks. Where are they?
It is wonderful the donations being made to rebuild. So much money! We’re glad it wasn’t totally destroyed, although it’s sad to see the photos of damage.
Yes, he sums are amazing. But these are the same people who contribute to other good causes, too, I am sure.
I am sure glad they saved some precious things. It still is so very sad though.
Sad,sad.
Yes sad very sad, certainly a tragedy.
Another commentator said that planes dropping water are not terribly precise. Out in the mountain wildfires, there is not so much need to be precise. And the very weight of the water might have collapsed even the stonework. (Water can be amazingly destructive too.)
We are all praying for all of Paris.
Yes I mentioned that a friend had let us know the same thing and that the water could have been more damaging.
