I smell vanilla…uh, oh.
Well, it’s nostalgia time around here.
Mama made her grandmother, Mommy’s “cup custards” as they were always called. In Mommy’s fridge, there were always a dozen custards for the grandkids, and mama’s mama and her aunts and the grandkids have been making them for decades.
So easy: 3 cups milk, 1 cup half and half or cream, 2 teaspoons vanilla, 3/4 cup sugar, 4 egg yolks, plus 1 egg, ground nutmeg.
Heat oven to 350F/180C. Place custard cups in a pan of hot water. Heat milk, cream on medium, stir in vanilla, sugar and eggs and cook until mix coats a spoon, not long. Pour custard into cups, 3/4 full, sprinkle with ground nutmeg, and bake for around 30 minutes or until the custards do not move anywhere when you jiggle the pan. Cool and eat.
This memory lane kick that mama is on has, of course, to do with isolation and reminiscing about other together-times, with family, with friends, the joy of sitting down to a lovely meal and chatting and laughing and poking fun at one another…of of those “human” (they tell me) activities that seem so far away right now.
BUT…mama and papa are making appointments to get stuck, whatever that means. I think that I am the one getting stuck–here at home with no one to play with while they gallavant around the countryside!
I think I may be exagerating…but it’s something to do with getting us all back to the table together eating custards! YAY.
And wait a minute, people, I AM AT THAT TABLE, TOO.
I’m sure mama will make a tiny Kitty Kustard for me…
My Dad says that his Mom made those cup custards. He always loved the little caramel at the bottom
OOH, our granny did not put caramel at the bottom. Next time….Or maybe on top and zap it with mama’s blowtorch to make creme brulee.
Oh my word that looks delicious, Loulou! Enjoy!
They are nostalgia food, mama says.
Oooohweeee!!! Loulou I hope you did get a bit! I had a few morsels of chicken yesterday – have no idea what’s coming up today! Probably not as good as custard……
Probably a red wine spritz, haha. That kitty was funny! Will put in blog…
Mamma is watching me as never before, LOL!!!!
It’s that glass of vino and that kitty….
Those look good. Thanks for the recipe.
Yum, I hear that custard stuff is really good!
Well, these are for sure because I can eat them, haha.
We remember our Mama’s custards with warm feelings too. They should be safe for you to eat LouLou, as long as you don’t have too much dairy ! Purrs !
I only had a taste. And what is this thing about milk that mama has read for years. Kitties ALWAYS had milk, in books, in movies, from their mamas, and so on. Maybe goat milk is okay.
