Now I know because it was explained to me that an epiphany can be related to the wise men and the baby Jesus or it can mean an sudden awareness, a deep awareness of something that perhaps one has not realized before and I think I have had one.
A really nice one.
But first, when we were on that woo-woo boat (okay, ship) everyone was talking about the Adriatic disaster and I have to say I sensed that people were a bit nervous-Nellie about being on a ferry, but our boat is not exactly a craft that was neglected and carrying illegal immigrants in the hold and so we were safe and comfortable in our little bunks, enjoying the calm sea.
BUT…5am, what do we hear but several blasts of the alarm system, waking mama and papa and me right up out of deep sleep and we all jumped into the hallways and saw that there were families with kids all dressed with backpacks ready to abandon ship, but mama said to herself, hey, no one blows nine or ten alarms…there is one for fire and one for jump ship and more, probably, like a call to safety practice, and so she wasn’t really worried (although she had been, let me tell you, when she heard about the Norman line ship that had started burning) and lo and behold, the ship announcer FINALLY said over the intercom, “Oh, we are so sorry about the electrical problem with our alarm system–nothing is wrong, go back to bed.”
(Imagine me in a closet on one of these!)
And so everyone was really happy. But in 15 minutes, the announcement came over the intercom again, in Spanish, Italian and English (just in case someone had missed the first one!), “We are so, so sorry for the scare; I hope you will all go back to bed.”
And so we did.
Fifteen minutes later, here she comes again, “Oh, we are so sorry for the inconvenience, and please have breakfast on us.”
Gee, thanks for everything, but COULD WE GET BACK TO SLEEP AFTER HAVING SHAKEN IN OUR BOOTS ABOUT THE ALARM FAILURE?:
But a nice thing about this crossing was that the new youngish (47) capitano really knew his seas and he took us on a smooth course all the way to Barcelona with only a little, lilting roll for an hour or two, during which time (I’m sorry but…)I threw up only ONCE and mama rubbed my neck and I was okay in a few minutes. But…we kitties do NOT like the sea, or at least we need to be trained early and I wasn’t. Still, it was a quick trip and beautiful weather and I was back in my own little house wandering around the old familiar places and then passing out cold. Home, sweet home.
(We had had a huge storm and there were lemons all over the place, knocked off the tree!–Heh, heh, limoncello!!!)
But my epiphany was this: Home can be lots of different places if there are nice people to know and sweet things to do and even I, wary of woo-woo boats more than any kitty I know, can also curl up in the stateroom closet and just go to sleep.
That is, unless the electrician screws up!!!
That was how many beeps???
Welcome back to France Loulou! Sometimes my mum & pop take me on the ferry to Salt Spring Island but it is a quick trip across to Canada. I am always happy to get there and feel the warm radiant floor heat and I stretch out longer than you can imagine. My mum reads your blog to me and I love to hear about your life in Italy & France. My uncles, Alexander & Roman, came to visit us from Vienna for Christmas & New Year. I had them wrapped around my little paw. I had my own place next to them at the table and we all dined together. My excellent table manners made everyone smile.
Happy New Year and may all of us have many epiphanies as 2015 unfolds. I turn 15 years young in March….wow. Adieu from your Scottish fold friend Binky!
Oh, Binks! I miss you and don’t even really know you but mama and papa do and that’s all I need. Yes, we are back and it’s pretty quiet around here. (Read: nuthin’ happnin’!!!) But mama and papa love it and have lots to do during winter to keep up with the rest of the year.
I’d love to share a table with you!!!
We are both bien elevees, no?
You have such big expressive eyes, Loulou. That sure sounds like a scary experience. Glad it was not a real emergency. Now that you’re home, you all need to rest up.
AH….rest. You’ve hit upon my favourite pastime…..
