And this is only HALF of the garden!

Hey, you want to see a garden? Well, check this one out—our neighbor has been gardening this piece of land since his family owned a few more acres around this little spot, but much was sold off over the years by the owners and heirs.  Jean tends the one you see in the photo. I tried to get a better shot, but just as I was about to take my best one, a HUGE black kitty shot out from under mama’s sage plant and just about scared the bejeezus out of me (and mama—you should have heard her shriek).

Mama, did you see that sucker?

Well, I dropped that camera and went after that kitty who was in MY territory and that kitty was up and over the fence in lightning time, which is not something I wish to or know how to do—leap over the fence, and besides, I can’t leave here because papa says I know where my kibble is poured, so to speak, and I still haven’t been able to seduce him away from mama as I try to do more often lately…

But Jean’s garden is a treasure and I sit on the fence and stare at it for hours at a time and sometimes he calls to mama in her garden and says, “Do you like cucumbers?” or “Do you need fresh eggs?” and so on and then mama goes to the fence and he throws beautiful cucumbers at her and she catches them or he makes a lovely pot of vegetables and eggs and hoists it up to her with a long metal rod (he doesn’t throw the eggs!) and you just can’t believe all the beautiful vegetables mama and papa have eaten over the years.

Right this minute mama unfroze the swiss chard from a few weeks ago and has made a bechamel sauce (whatever that is, but it tastes REALLY good to this kitty) to mix with it for a lasagna in the near future. More on that later.

And he has wild spinach and cumquats and grapes and kiwis and you name it! What a joy to have this garden to gaze upon in my revery hours.  If only that black kitty hadn’t stepped over the LINE!!!

But I have his number now and he’d better watch his back…

Yeah, and you’d better STAY on that fence if you know what’s good for you!

Here’s the other half with just-planted potatoes in the new soil.
