Loulou, I wish you could tell mama why you often pee next to the john instead of using it as you always have so well.
Well I think we may have reached a turning point in my previous agility to jump onto the john and do my thing, so to speak. Unfortunately, mama has been finding, shall we say, kitty liquid right next to the john instead of in the john…
So mama is looking at covered litter boxes, and if anybody has any brilliant ideas about one that will be comfortable for me, I would love to hear them!
There is one called the Petsafe scoop free automatic cleaning litter box which frankly to me sounds like much too long a name to be of any worth, but supposedly I jump in it and do my thing and then it cleans itself with an automatic raking thingy! Not only too good to be true but awfully expensive if you ask this kitty.
I think maybe it’s becoming too difficult to jump up onto the toilet lid because it’s slippery plastic and perhaps doesn’t feel as secure as it used to, but mama would like to keep me trying to go as I have before but just doesn’t know how to fix the situation of finding a little…er…wet spot next to the john on some mornings (it doesn’t happen all the time)….any ideas, as I said, are welcome.
It could be that mama changed my litter and I simply liked the previous one, but Cat’s Best is what I used before the new, more sandy-feeling litter, and mama cannot imagine why I would shun the old one at this late date.
Oh, if only I could get my thoughts across to mama….
I may just have water on the paw, like mama, haha.
It’s okay, Loulou, we’ll work this out…
My mum uses a SoPhresh cat litter box for me. It is simple and she likes it. I like it too but I am only 16 weeks old so what do I know?
Good luck!

Mama can’t get anything here that is in the USA. Cat’s Best is flushable and I’ve used it for years. Then she found one in Italy that is more sandy-feeling. I think it is mainly that I can’t easily fit any longer on top of the toilet hole.
Those automatic boxes scare some cats so we don’t know if that would be the best option for you, Loulou. And we’ve never liked covered boxes…we feel too confined in them. We hope you find something that works for you.
Well, I have a BIG box and I think it’s going to work, no lid, I understand wanting to be out in the open air. But I like the outdoors most of all! I do my “other” thing out in the garden…very clean there.
Oh dear, Loulou, maybe you don’t like your new litter? Cats can be quite fussy about any changes to the norm. The only advice I have for your mama is that I’ve read enclosed boxes aren’t great as the smell and germs get trapped inside. The boxes that have the lower edges are better than the ones that have the higher edges, as they’re more accessible. I hope this helps.
Yes, it helps, thank you. I’m for lower edges, also and higher closures as kitties need their space to do their things! I just hope she goes back to the toilet bowl with help from a little stool nearby.
Hmmmm – how about one of those kiddie training toilets? Oh, but they don’t flush. Well, mama said Sassy always used a litterbox – but as she got older would miss it sometimes and stand on the wrong side! But you’re not there – she was 22. A little ladder to reach the toilet? Mama will think about this…..
We have a little stool (no pun intended, haha) next to the john and she only has to learn to use it.
I put puppy pads by the litter box for those of mine that think outside the box.
Oh my, a litter change can sure cause that to happen if the new litter doesn’t feel good on the paws. We had that problem once and the Dad bought some Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract and it worked. Best get some puppy training pads (non-scented) to put down outside the box too.
Good thinking–puppy pads and Cat Attract, if I can find it. But I think it’s time for a litter box after 10 years of using the john (a small bowl with flushable litter in it).
LouLou, many older kitties get arthritis and one solution is a litter box with lower sides, as some littler boxes require some high steppin’. (The automatic ones appear to have pretty high thresholds, in addition to being $$$$ and they also make some noise.)
Some cat slaves put “puppy pads” under and around the edges of the litter box to catch any overflow. Of course Mama will try to get you to the vet to make sure nothing is wrong physically (with you, not her) but we don’t know what kind of hoops she might have to jump through to get you to the vet’s, and with her knee acting up…
Sending purrs.
I think our vet will be open tomorrow for visit or at least to drop off a urine sample! Thanks for good advice!
We’ve got 2 cats and 3 litter boxes. 1 of the litter boxes has a lid, the other 2 don’t. Sugar is very particular about her litter boxes.
Thank you for advice! Loulou is used to going in her toilet “bowl” IN the john, filled with flushable litter, but it may be time for change.
