Sounds like a very good book, to me.
Well, evidently that is not the motto for the Arizona school board, which, mama says, wants to scissor or black out two pages in a biology textbook that “discuss sexually transmitted diseases and contraception, including mifepristone, a drug that can be used to prevent or halt a pregnancy.”
The article in the New York Times goes on to say that “A law passed two years ago in Arizona requires schools to teach “preference, encouragement and support to childbirth and adoption” over abortion, and the school board decided that those pages were in violation of this law — even though the Arizona Education Department, which examined the book for compliance, found that they were not.”
So who’s running this show anyway, the Arizona Education Department or the school board? Let’s hope it is causing some very real arguments that could throw light on the darkened minds of the censors.
It is really amazing to this kitty that such ignorance can still be prevalent in a society (at least outside of Arizona!) that is accepting gay rights, same-sex marriage and parenting, and attempting to distribute information in schools to all young people that might help them avoid disease and unwanted pregnancies.
Food for thought…
How can knowledge be dangerous, for heaven’s sake? Frankly, if more kitties had had sex education in their young lives, there might not be the vey evident problem of unwanted or abandoned kitties (and doggies) in the world.
Hey, here is a question I’ve never asked: Do Catholics or any other group against abortion and a woman’s right to choose neuter their animals?
Any comments?
“Fixed” and proud of it. And I was well in a week and not adding unwanted kitties to those already in need of homes and love.
We know one catholic family (chums of ours)who are all the way pro spay neuter (and pro choice for humans too) and one couple (on nodding terms with us) who don’t neuter or spay their animals and have a vast brood of children too. The animals get the bum deal of course and are at the bottom of the heap welfare wise. More than once the dreaded RSPCA have removed their animals because they were in such a terrible state. It’s very sad and it’s teaching those children not to take responsibility in any shape or form for other living beings.
We also know of people of the Jehovah’s Witness faith who won’t allow their pets to have veterinary care ever. But then again, we know of people of Christian faith who don’t care for their animals well, and agnostics, atheists too…. the list goes on and on. It’s a homo sapiens problem innit and religious creed seems to compound it and give it “integrity” *spit* *hiss*
Me and the ape ain’t keen on some aspects of religion and the way it’s skewing attitudes towards biology, humaneness and intelligence back to the middle ages.
My purse of course, has no coins in it and I’m very proud of that fact.
Luff
Mungo
Well, Mungo, as usual, you are wise and wonderful. And yes, it takes all kinds and unkindness seems not to discriminate–the rich, the poor, the religious, the atheists, the agnostics–some are kind and some simply are not and never will be.
Mama has been in planned parenthood for years and years and feels the same about creatures with pelts unless they have homes all ready for them.
Thank you for your words.
We heard about this and were also disappointed that they wanted to take these pages out. 🙁
Not to mention the books that have been removed from some schools and libraries in places like Alabama and Mississippi….oh, boy.
