Well, I am embarrassed to say that I completely forgot that Passover was Saturday, so happy Pasach from all of us. In Los Angeles, mama and papa used to bake very large matzah crackers for Passover seders, and when the bakers were first introduced to making matzah, they were stunned to hear mama’s instructions: everything had to be mixed, rolled out and then rolled again with the spiky tool that keeps the cracker from rising, and all had to be done in less than 18 minutes, by Jewish law.
But the bakers were wonderful and went at it with so much enthusiasm that the matzah came out perfect and was actually edible, haha. I’m joking, as a really good matzah tastes wonderful with a little salt sprinkled over it before baking.
So forgive us for forgetting such an important holiday.
HOW DID I FORGET? Don’t tell me it’s age, okay?
Happy Pesach Loulou
And to all of you out there who are celebrating Passover.
I’m always forgetting stuff too, Loulou. Except I never forget when it’s dinner time. ~Ernie
ME, NEITHER!!
My Mom and Dad say they’ve never had matzah before but it sounds really delicious. My Mom said she thought guacamole would be a mighty nice accompaniment with those nice big crackers too!!
Hugs, Teddy
Matzah is easy, mama says. To try out, use 1 cup whole wheat flour, a pinch of salt, and add water until you have a maleable dough, not sticky. Heat the oven to high, around 375-400. Make just one, and you can break it: Roll out the dough using a little flour if needed so it doesn’t stick to your rolling pin and roll it as thin as you can, maybe roll it out right on a baking sheet. Using a fork, prick it all over in very close together lines and bake for about 10-12 minutes until brown. Let cool, sprinkle with salt and dip guacamole, haha. It’s just an unleavened cracker, no more.
Yum, matzah with a sprinkling of salt. Sounds delicious, Loulou.
It was very good, especially with guacamole, haha.
Gosh I miss the big city! My mouth is watering for the taste of matzah crackers my friend Jack would share a passover! Thanks for the wonderful memories! Have a marvellously happy day1
We, too, miss our yearly seder with friends in LA. Such sweet memories, and so glad we could generate more for you.
Our Rabbi downstairs and all the people going in and out – and the sack of food – that I stuck my nose in – I knew something was up!! Mamma picked me up quickly before anyone saw – oh what a doggie I am! Yep – Saturday March 27th – but we forgot too!!!!
Wow…all the people is a bit unnerving…were there really a lot? It’s a lovely ceremony and so enlightening.
Well not so many – they were all meeting there to go to the synagogue! Last year we heard music – but this year was silent. Mamma, Papa and me – we like the music!!!
We love music, too, and inspired by a blogger, we listened to Roy Orbison Running Scared yesterday and it was incredible. What a voice. And he sang with KD Laing too and that was incredible.
Chag Pesach! I did not know about the 18 minute rule.
Well, mama didn’t know either, and a rabbi came out to her bakery and gae his blessing to make matzah and off she went…18 minutes start to finish. It was exciting, mama said, to see her 12 bakers turning out the huge crackers they made. Maybe we have a photo somewhere…
Our human sometimes eats “lightly salted” rice cakes. She likes them, but what she really likes is “salt bagels.” Not that her blood pressure needs any.
Oh, mama loves salty, too, not sweet. Mama soon as you’re born with one or the other and that’s how your taste buds work but a little bit of salt won’t hurt will it?
We often never remember what we forgot Loulou!
Why do I know what that feels like so well?
