Do you know what mama did?
See these windmills? She bought them for some little anthros that she forgot to give them to and so she uses them now to make the spots where she has planted tiny tomato seedlings that just aren’t growing any larger for some reason (maybe giving them fertilizer too young, mama?) and so this year the tomato plants are NOT well on the way to being sauces and soups for winter, but instead are now at all on the way to becoming anything other than midget plants that might not even make it.
I mean, can anyone out there even SEE a tomato seedling in this photo? Well, it’s there, but stunted.
On the other hand, a tomato volunteer, as they are called in garden-speak, has come up on its own and is about 10-inches high already!
Go figure. Which is to say that Maman Nature does exactly what she has to do and tomato plants will do whatever THEY have to do and so we all should just sit back and WAIT. I’ll bet that if mama didn’t plant anything this season, tomatoes would come up all over the place anyway. What do you think?
I think mama should just go out there and throw a bunch of seeds over her shoulder and see what comes up later. That’s how I would do it
Nobody ever listens to me…
We have complete faith in your Mama and am certain you will have tomatoes for some super delicious sauces!
If you could see those little suckers, you might change your mind. They are really stunted!
Wow!!! that last shot is some wild freeform yoga position!!! Well, i knos nothing about tomatoes – except they come from the market!!! And those little yummy ones your mama grows i like to sneak off the vines. But I’ll bet those windmills are a kick – especially in the tramontane winds!!! fun!!!!!!!
You know, I gave them one glance and that was IT. They won’t even TURN without wind and it has gone. Ah, well, you can play with them when you get here.
Oh, no, have been trying to leave a comment again. 🙁
Jan, my guru did a bunch of updates, which he says will help the comments box, but I don’t know why I got `12 others and not yours. Weird.
At least Mama has a volunteer for all those sauces and soups. I repotted the catnip today and put a tomato cage around the dogwood tree I planted Saturday because something dug all around it. And we had another 3/4 inch of rain. Mayday !
Wonder who your ‘digger’ is? A mystery, I love those!
I like your idea of just tossing out the seeds.
You can bet your paws mama is going to do that. Out of frustration!
Maybe a skunk. Digging a hole for the dogwood (it’s barely more than a twig) may have stirred up some grubs and earthworms. Not a mole, though – it was able to move around large clods of dirt. Stay tuned !
