Papa and mama took me out for a drive the other day (to prepare me for our “crossing” into family-land) and there were many, many pumpkins in a field that looked like a Cinderella/lookalike contest was going on and every contestant had brought her wheels! I wonder what all the fuss is about Halloween with costumes and such when the celebration, in Mexico, for example, is called Day of the Dead when people honor their deceased friends and relatives and put the dead’s favorite things to eat and drink on their tombs and have a few moments together to think about the ones who died and what they meant to the lives of the still living…that’s what Halloween is for many.
But those little kids running around in their frog and fairy costumes look awfully cute.
Still, it is also the commemoration on November 1st of saints and martyrs in the Catholic church and called All Saints’ Day. On Nov 2 prayers for these saints are said for their souls and so that day is called All Souls’ Day. Duh. Sometimes I sound so inane to myself!
For me, it’s the end of summer and the beginning of winter when my coat will get a bit thicker and I’ll want a bit more kibble in the dish (you hear that, anthros?) but I think I would like to dress up this year and do a bit of trick or treating in the neighborhood.
When I figure out just how to go about this rather complicated endeavor, I’ll let you know.
Meanwhile, those pumpkins make really good pie and soups and cookies and breads or are just good cut in chunks, brushed with olive oil and roasted in a hot oven—so mama says. All I know is that she gave me a little taste of roast pumpkin and I was pleased.
Sort of.
Those mice pulling Cinderella’s coach look a lot more attractive….
Hey, bug off, Loulou. I have to get dressed for the ball!
