WOW! That amazing Annie Dillard says you can actually SWIM with this guy below in the Galapagos Islands!
Mama is re-reading Annie Dillard’s beautiful book, Teaching a Stone to Talk and I said I would mention it today because mama thinks (as did those who awarded her the Pulitzer Prize in literature one year!) that she is one of the planet’s best writers about how we see and respond to things and how our world is put together. But in the book mentioned, Ms. Dillard is sitting on a rock with a shipmate and a young male sea lion, unafraid, sides up on the rock beside her. The passage is so lovely that I cannot do it justice without quoting it but I think you would love the whole book if you have not yet read her marvellous views of the world.
I’ll give you a hint. The young lion goes to sleep on her arm…
Well, I tell you, mama was about to get on a plane for the Galapagos except that she just got back and travel is not on her itinerary, haha.
But isn’t it lovely when you find an author that really changes the way you look at each day and who really makes your mind jump into places it might not have jumped before? I love books like that–Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats is one. I LOVE that book. And mama says they made the musical, CATS, from the book. I could read it over and over again. If I could read. But mama reads to me often and I just go into a kind of literary nirvana, see below.
I know it’s rude to drift off when someone is kind enough to read to you but……..
OOPS. Woke up! Do read Annie Dillard if you can. You will never be the same afterward.
Loulou, the tail-licking episode newsletter, I cannot download – ? But the photo is right up there with the 80-year-old japanese porn star who just retired! I do good just to lick my foot. Go girl!!!
Oh, merde, I was working on this with my guru but he’s very occupied and so I posted another version that you might try. Some screw-up in WordPress.
Loulou, Mama says she is going to order that book on her iBooks as soon as she finishes what she’s got in the works so she can focus – her new one at a time rule! Not that she’s good at following rules, even her own!!
That first look on your face makes me think maybe your mama is reading something by Stephen King instead of Annie Dillard. Or one of my papà’s books on meditation in that parting shot. So far with all his reading, he has never been able to achieve THAT position and zen state. Brava, Loulou!!
Hey, Mya, my middle name is Space-Out.
That does sound like an incredible book about the sea lion.
Oh, if only I could swim, I’d be out there right NOW!
Sounds like a good book if your mom is enjoying it again.
Yes, this is the first time she has EVER read a book twice. Hmmm….need we address memory issues. Uh, oh, she’s comin’ after me…gotta go.
The mom says she will definitely check that book out.
Oh, she will be SO happy. Tell her to contact me when she reads it and I’ll pass on the info to mama. Or just email mama. That’s fine, too.
Oh LouLou, driftin’ off just mean your comfy. You also look adorable. By da way, we can’t seem to pull up your ‘partment livin’ posty. We get a page not found message. Anyways, big hugs fur all.
Luv ya’
Dezi and Raena
I posted another Apartment Living and it’s very important to see because it’s all about the discount for The Cat Solarium. Sorry about that. A glitch in WordPress.
I need to look up that Annie Dillard book. I have a few go-to re-reads – To Kill a Mockingbird – Sherlock Holmes. I have so much new I still want to read and I feel guilty rereading, but sometimes it is like comfort food.
I still can’t read “Apartment Living” – is it lost in space?
Speaking of comfort- being read to is the best, isn’t it.
Well, I adore it, and papa tolerates it but mama LOVES reading out loud, especially poetry. Papa says she does that pretty well because she doesn’t ‘put on airs’ the way some poets read their stuff. She just reads.
