(I think there might be something on the tele about Holy Week…)
No, no, not THAT Santa, but the week of holiness here and in Spain and other countries that is celebrated before Easter, during which there are processions and floats and hooded penitents and so much more.
Because it’s just around the corner, Papa and mama went to Spain a few years ago to see what happens in various cities and the processions were really amazing, all decorated with flowers and candles. Someone told us that it takes a year to make one of the chariots.
The Virgin is the main character and the huge floats are carried by six or eight men on each side and there is a lovely rhythm to their walk and behind them, there are drums making a very unusual and haunting sound, da da dum, da da dum….(here is a pause)…da da dum, dum dum and it’s all very magical.
I wasn’t there of course, but mama gave me a few photos to put in today’s blog.
The streets are always lined with people watching the chariots go by. It often takes hours…
This one was especially beautiful, but all were spectacular. I liked the ones with candles.
And this was a gypsy, singing to the Virgin as the float moved slowly through the street.
It was the tapas that made me want to go! Sardines, anchovies, you name it…
That was a wonderful trip and thanks for sharing them with us. We think we would stay home too and review the photos as there were a lot of feet stamping about for a cat to be there
Oh, you can’t imagine how many anthros in the streets! Maybe a few more pics before Easter?
Ha! New reader to your blog! Great post LouLou
Thank you. Your trees are lovely. But I climb one outside….still, they are great.
Loulou est une incorrigible gourmande !
Les tapas, c’est très mauvais pour le tour de taille…
Oh, pas les tapas de maman! Il sont de tomates, ou petits poissons, comme les anchois, etc. Délicieux…
That would be me, Loulou. Tapas. And Mama would go for the sangria. But it would be great to see that once. Do they still have the parade or whatever its called in Collioure? Mama saw a couple of times but said they looked like the ku klux klan and it made her squeamish! But do they wear those pointy hats in Spain? I’ll bet the music and floats are FABU!!! And the food…….
LOTS of hats and yes, they are definitely reminscent of the KKK but I’m going to look into that custom…intéressant.
Beautiful photos, thanks for sharing.
So would you like to see about a gazillion more? Just kidding…but we do have lots.
Sardines, yes, we’re not sure about anchovies since we’ve never had them. But enjoy.
We live in the anchois part of France. I like them on PIZZA!
We love seeing how other countries celebrate Holy Week and Easter.
Mama says it was one of the most memorable experience of her travel life.
Oh my, that sounds like a wonderfully festive and moving event.
When the gypies sang, it was thrilling.
LouLou, you might get to go everywhere – if only you could bear to travel ! At least you can look at Mama’s lovely pictures.
Oh, if only I could chew Travelgum.
