Obama got tough.

Isn’t that what everyone wanted him to do? And then when he does it, the Republicans protest.  Go, Obama!

Today mama read me a poem published on a friend’s blog, and we both cried.  The blog is called It’s Noodle and Noodle is a very savvy kitty, just like the savvy doggies and kitties at Jan’s Funny Farm. The trouble is that I love talking with these really smart, nice animals and we often get into pithy matters and mama thinks I’m nuts because I go around the house muttering to myself and these friends who aren’t in the room but on blogs and she thinks I may be going round the bend.  Just because they’re not anthros.

I don’t think my friend Noodle will mind if I put the poem in this blog, too. I feel that if more anthros read it, perhaps they will not be so shocked at Mr. Obama’s actions, which are only radical in the sense that he has hit too many Republican brick walls in his time as president and independent action was absolutely necessary to maintain the integrity of our beloved America.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
with conquering limbs astride from land to land;
here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
a mighty woman with a torch whose flame
is the imprisoned lightning and her name,
mother of exiles. From her beaconed hand
glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
the air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

” Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!”
cries she with silent lips.” Give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses yearning to breath free.
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Emma Lazarus ( 1849-1887 )

There. Isn’t that moving and lovely (thank you, Noodle) and can we now hold up our muzzles high and be proud to be true Americans who welcome those who are persecuted, work in fear of deportation and only long for a good life for their families?

I’ll tell you this, and I said it in another blog. You take away the workmen and housekeepers and bakers and shoe repairers and bathroom attendants and line cooks and gardeners and caregivers and nurses aides and window washers and on and on and on from their jobs in this country, and you will see the lives of everyone on every level, Republicans included, stop dead in their tracks overnight!

Immigrants are not taking jobs from us—they are doing jobs no one else will do in our privileged society. But more than that, they are enriching our nation with what they bring from their own cultures.

What do Republicans fear, for heaven’s sake? Because it is almost always fear that causes anthros to resist change. And change is the only thing in the world that anyone can be sure of happening. America’s change is long overdue, and there were many Republicans in the past who attempted to welcome immigration reform. Why cannot the two parties work together for a change, and for a change?

Well, here I am ranting and raving. Tomorrow I’ll get back to the beauty of Roma…

Even kitties and mice can be friends…immigrants are our friends.
