Wikipedia: War Between The  States

Yes or no on the presence of Confederate flags in public places and government? This kitty is thinking hard about this one.

Well, surely not in government nor in school classrooms or anywhere that the flag will offend.  And yet, is there any place it will not offend, given what it stands for?

But to remove all symbols of the flag, one would have to change textbooks, historical information pamphlets, so many, many sources that contain any history of the war between the south and north, that it would become a never-ending task that might perhaps create more controversy where peaceful agreement is needed.

Papa thinks that attempts of total removal of the Confederate flag might be counterproductive and possibly make the flag a martyr. And he is very good at seeing both sides of a dilemma. But to remove the flag from government offices and public display should definitely be an issue.

The fact is that the Confederate flag symbolizes a very painful and inhuman chapter in American history—the enslavement of individuals against their will and the horrendous treatment of slaves by some.

So sad that it took the murder of nine people to raise this issue nationally for the first time. But mama was touched that several Republicans are asking for removal of the flag in many areas.

Racism still exists in our country, and there is the simple fact that our southern states generate a large share of it, still clinging to the hatred generated because of beliefs that fellow humans should be the slaves of others.

But guess what? The war is over. If only we could end the present one.

I wish we could live together peacefully as some of my friends do…
